Extracts of Care (2020)
Inspired by sericulture - the cultivation of the silkworm - this object abstracts the idea of a cocoon. Using hand-building techniques, a fragile, hollow, black porcelain hoop was crafted and made weaker still by a surface split that followed a deliberate puncture in the form. Mineral, brittle and bonelike, the impermeable surface of the hollow covering is augmented by a cushioning similar in nature to flesh. The multiple silk fibres render my palette of skin tones and are knotted to preserve and mend the facade. This project nods to the requirement of care to become a collective effort made universal.
