This project was commissioned and produced for the Caring Futures, exhibition at Sølvberget Galleri in Stavanger, Norway.
 
'The medicalization of my body informs my artistic practice, I consider the inflammatory impact of chronic illness on my basic vulnerabilities, and I respond to the medical gaze. I imagine the disassembly of my body in a manner that echoes Western medical traditions by examining my appendages and organs independently and investigating gestures performed during medical examinations.
 
Our senses allow us to perceive, process and integrate the external world and some of our sensing organs simultaneously channel our inner states outward. Three new textile artworks explore the interfacing capacities of our eyes, tongues, and hands for the Caring Futures exhibition. A stretched image of my ear canal is also depicted in a textile artwork from 2020.
 
I use digital processes to transfer images of my body in its natural form and colour onto silk. Through the soft and safe synthesis of image, material and live experience, I subvert traditions of craft to explore ideas of de/construction: I fray, fold, rip and split to produce displays of silk fibre that exhibit the body as an assemblage, made up of multiple beings, cultures and matters.
 
Our fleshy realities are becoming more integrated with technology. In addition to improving medical care and patient wellbeing, the use of digital technology to monitor and promote health threatens subjugation. The contradictions and complexity involved in matters are best understood when thinking through the body’s sensorium and its constituting relations. Split Observations challenges the disembodied construction of binary oppositions and illusions of perfectibility, wholeness and oneness.'
