By creating a new series of textile artworks for Muld’s dining room, Ruth Gilmour has responded to her surroundings and her working experiences at Muld. Here, her time is spent sowing seeds, mulching soil, weeding, watering and harvesting plants. When in her studio, she unravels silk with a needle, thread by thread.
 
In order to evoke the natural phenomena she encounters at Muld, Gilmour experimented with shreds of silk and digital image-making techniques. Abstract, colourful and energetic, the compositions are odes to things like: the warmth of the rising sun; the late rain; a sprouting seedling; or the effervescence of fermenting apples. Along with the title Places to take root, Gilmour’s fluid arrangement of silk threads positions the loosening of form as a productive process; one that is capable of cultivating growth and producing new perspectives.
